It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Kimberly Elizabeth (Cox) Burdick, a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, who was called home too soon on April 24, 2025, after a courageous journey through chronic illness.
Born on December 2, 1974, in Palos Heights, Illinois, to the late Gerald A. Cox Sr. and Monica M. (McCawley) Cox, Kim's vibrant spirit touched the lives of many.
A true fighter, Kim met the secondary complications of her spina bifida with remarkable strength and resilience. She never allowed her condition to define her, living each day with a fierce determination to lead a full and active life. Her independence and unwavering perseverance in the face of health challenges were an inspiration to all who knew her. She had a unique gift for connecting with people, effortlessly turning acquaintances into cherished friends. She had a warm and open heart, never meeting a stranger who didn't quickly become a friend.
Kim was a passionate and dedicated advocate for disability inclusion. Living in her beloved lakeside town, she worked tirelessly to ensure accessibility for everyone. Her efforts led to widespread sidewalk accessibility for wheelchair users and voting machines that accommodated their needs. She was a proud and active member of the Spina Bifida Association, finding joy and connection at their annual conferences.
Throughout her adult life, Kim was blessed with the unwavering companionship of her service animals, Lanka Lu and Finnegan. She lovingly raised Finnegan from a ten-week old puppy, expertly training him to assist her. Kim also had a tender heart for animals, welcoming a stray kitten, Bella, into her home and heart on a cold winter day.
The center of Kim's world was her family. She cherished their visits, especially the warmth and laughter of bonfires at the family land. Fearless and adventurous, Kim embraced life to the fullest, whether riding on the back of an ATV or kayaking on the serene waters of Lake Maxinkuckee.
Kimberly is survived by her loving mother: Monica Cox, and her five devoted siblings: Monica Martz, Jerry (Susan) Cox, Connie (Bill) Wilson, Michelle (Joe) Smith, and David Cox. Her memory will be treasured by her twenty nieces and nephews and ten great-nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in her heart. Kim delighted in their visits, always ready with a wheelchair ride and a generous dose of spoiling.
Private services for immediate family will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Kimberly's name to either the Shriner's Hospital, Spina Bifida Association or the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545, where Kim received compassionate care in her final days. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the entire staff at the Center for Hospice Care for their kindness and support.
