Ioan "Janny" Varo



July 15, 1956 - October 13, 2024



Ioan 'Janny' Varo, 68, of Culver, Indiana, passed away on October 13, 2024, due to natural causes.

Janny was born on July 15, 1956 in Medias, Romania. He was the son of Ioan and Etelka (Molnar) Varo. He grew up with 4 sisters and a brother. He was the 4th born, as twins with his sister, Margareta.

Janny graduated from Scoala Profesionala in Sibiu, as Strungar, or in English, as a lathe operator and worked as such for Bachelita Company, Medias. He enlisted and completed his military training in the Romanian Army at Caracal, and Targu Jiu, Romania.

He escaped communist Romania in 1982 by swimming at night over the Danube River, where he encountered extreme danger. He became a refugee in Yugoslavia, and later asked for asylum in America. When he came to America, he worked in home remodeling and roofing in Chicago, Illinois.

Janny especially loved music.

He is survived by his 2 sons - Claudio and Beniamin Varo, grandchildren - Sofia Grace and Paul William Varo, brother - Stefan Varo, sisters - Etelka, Irina, Luliana (Lulu), and Margareta, 16 nieces and nephews, and 33 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Preceding Janny in death are his parents, Ioan and Etelka Varo.

A time of visitation will be held at the Odom Funeral Home, Culver, Indiana, on Friday, November 8, 2024 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM EST and the Wake on Saturday, November 9, 2024 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM EST. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 12:00 PM EST (noon) at the funeral home, with Pastor David Marc officiating. Interment will follow.

Memorial contributions may be given in Janny's memory to the Culver Police Department or the Culver Fire Department. Envelopes may be sent to Odom Funeral Home, 104 E Lakeshore Drive, Culver, IN 46511.
